A trip to Muir Woods, October 2016

Hello everyone,

Last month, while on a trip to California, we were very fortunate to be able to visit Muir Woods National Monument; a national park north of San Francisco.

Muir Woods is a beautiful forest that is home to the closest Redwood trees to San Francisco. The Redwoods are the tallest trees on Earth, with the absolute tallest actually being located further north, in Redwood National Park.

To get to Muir Woods from San Francisco we utilised public transport, and while it was a little slow, it was effective and efficient. When we arrived we became very aware of the extremely limited parking at Muir Woods, and in fact were glad we used the busses to get there, as we would have drove out of our way to find that we couldn't park. There is park and ride in Sausalito, so if you drive, use that.

There is a limited amount I can say about Muir Woods, as it really is just that - a woodland. I will say, however, that if you want to really escape from reality for a day, and want to see some of the most stunning, incredible and tallest trees you have ever seen, then it is definitely worth the visit. The Redwoods are a testament to how diverse and undeniably beautiful our world is.

For your information, there are public facilities at the park, including toilets, a cafe, and a shop. Cellular signal is virtually non-existent, so if you decide to take one of the hiking trails - which pretty much go out into wilderness - you must make sure you are well prepared.

Take a look at my photos below, but understand that no photo can truly capture how gigantic they really are. You could fit a fairly normal sized room inside some of the tree trunks, and their height rivals that of some fairly sizable buildings.

For a vague idea of how vast some of these trees are, here is a fun picture I got of me standing inside the trunk of one of the trees.

Have a great day everyone,

Dan.
