TMNT HeroClix Review

Hello everyone,

This week saw the release of a brand new tabletop game from Wizkids, adding the TMNT to their popular HeroClix brand.

When I was younger I used to play tabletop games and roleplay games, but it has been quite a long time. However, when I heard that there would be a new TMNT game, I thought it was worth checking out.

We bought a case of the individual mystery pack figures and the Mouser Mayhem! starter set. The case of individual figures contained 24 mystery packs, and the starter set contained four. According to HeroClix there are "35 characters" in the range, which apparently does not include the four in the box set. Between the 24 mystery ones and the four in the box set, I ended up with (quite miraculously) 26 different figures out of a total of 39 (35+4). So I guess I'll go and buy some more mystery bags at some point (I'll probably end up buying another whole case again), and see who I end up with!

Let's take a look at the box set first. I was surprised when I opened it up at how much was in the box. There are lots of maps and tokens, various instruction booklets, dice and of course the figures.

Let's take a close up look.

I won't bore you all with how the game works, because if you're reading this there's a good chance you want to know about the contents rather than how to play the game, as it is rather specialised. The rules are quite involved and I'd end up writing a long and complicated piece here if I was to try and explain them all.

I think that the box set actually is pretty good value. It retails at around $25 (US, plus any applicable local taxes), and as you can see from the photos above, there is a lot in the box.

It's worth noting that the set contains three different pre-written scenarios for you to play. Of course, you can adapt and play as you want, but it's nice if you're new to it to have some guidance. Of course, if you are more advanced you can buy the mystery bag booster figures and expand your gameplay. So, let's now take a look at those.

Around the outside of the box the packs come in at the stores:

The figures I ended up with (note that there are 22, not 24, as I had two doubles):

I was really pleased to get some pretty neat characters such as Fugitoid, Nobody, Leatherhead and one of the "rare" white comic book TMNTs (in this case, Donatello). It's interesting that HeroClix actually pull from the entire TMNT universe, with there being characters from all the comic series and the various TV series. It's fun to have a 2012 Leatherhead but a Baxter Stockman Fly from the 1987 series, alongside 1984 comic series turtles, for example. They even have Alpha One from the 1987 series, which I thought was really random and cool, since he is a very unusual character. They seem to have done their research, and put a lot of thought into it, which is nice.

The paintwork on some of them is a little sloppy, but overall they aren't bad. They are very small and must be pretty hard over all to get 100% accurate. Some of the cards in the mystery packs come a little bent up, but the figures come well protected in a plastic tray (which also means you can't feel the packs to find ones you need!).

Once I buy more and (hopefully) get more of the figures I'm currently missing, I'll be sure to update here.

Have a great day everyone,

Dan.
